After you have had your walls painted, you will want to routinely clean them. This helps to keep them looking their best and prevents them from becoming dirty and dingy. Improperly cleaning your walls can cause damage though, so you will want to ensure you’re cleaning them the right way. Here are the steps you will want to follow:
Determine What Type of Paint You’re Cleaning
The first thing you will want to do is determine what type of paint you are cleaning. This is important because a semi-gloss or glossy enamel paint will stand up best to washing. Satin, flat, or eggshell latex paints do not do as well. As such, you want to wash these walls less frequently and scrub less vigorously.
Dust the Walls Before Cleaning
Before you get to work cleaning your walls, you will want to dust them. Use a microfiber cloth or duster to remove debris and residue from the walls and the corners of your walls. Do not wet the walls until you have dusted them.
Lay Towels or a Drop Cloth to Catch Debris and Cleaning Solutions
The next thing you will want to do is lay towels or a drop cloth near the wall that you are cleaning. The towel or drop cloth will catch any debris that falls from the wall or any cleaning solutions. This helps to minimize the mess you make while cleaning and protects your flooring.
Clean the Wall With Mild Cleaners
Now you are ready to clean the walls. Start by cleaning the wall with a soft cloth or sponge dipped in warm water and mild liquid dish detergent. Start from the top and work your way down. If there are areas on your wall that are so dirty that soap does not remove the spot or stain, you can use diluted ammonia, vinegar, or baking soda to clean the area. However, this should only be done as needed. Never use abrasive scrubbing brushes on the wall, as it can cause the paint to peel.
Dry the Wall Thoroughly After Each Wall or Section
Lastly, grab a dry towel and pat dry the wall after completing a wall or section. This helps to prevent any excess water from damaging your paint or drywall. Additionally, if weather permits, open up your windows and/or use a fan to help the walls dry faster.
