Everyday life can be hard on your walls and touch up paint can be such a hassle! While it is sometimes necessary to break out the paint cans and brushes between jobs, routinely cleaning your walls can be a much simpler, efficient way to keep them looking fresh. Here are some tips and tricks to maintain your interior paint and keep it looking new!
How to Maintain Your Interior Paint
It is important to first determine the best cleaning method based on the type of interior paint on your walls. A satin, flat, or eggshell based paint is less durable and cannot be scrubbed too hard. You will want to avoid harsh chemicals and be extra gentle applying a mild detergent and water.
Semi-gloss and glossy finishes are more resilient, but you will want to test a small area first to avoid scratches and other damage.
To ensure an efficient cleaning process, always start by moving furniture, paintings, and other wall décor. You will also want to dust the walls and trim to avoid adding moisture to dirt and causing a bigger mess. A simple duster or microfiber cloth will get the job done!
Now we are ready to clean! Combine warm water with a small amount of mild soap, start at the top and work your way down in a gentle circular motion. Have a second bucket of warm water to rinse off any soapy residue using a soft sponge. Be sure to wring out most of the water as to not overly dampen your walls.
If a wall has stubborn marks or stains, you may need to conceal it with touch up paint. Do not try to aggressively scrub as you could damage the paint and/or drywall.
The final step that should not be forgotten is to thoroughly dry your walls removing excess water that could leave damage. Use any fans at your disposal to speed up the process and open your windows if weather permits.
