A Special Note on Sherwin-Williams PaintShield™

Painting Your Home Office

The presence of COVID-19 in our world, country, and our own community has raised an awareness of pandemic diseases like never before in our history. The good news is that it’s got us focusing on how to prevent the spread using simple techniques like social distancing, quarantine and washing of hands and not touching your face. These hygienic techniques and products are relevant even when there is no coronavirus! So, in light of all this, I want to tell you an antimicrobial and antibacterial painting product we are using, Sherwin-Williams PaintShield™, but hang tight – I need to explain a couple of things first.

You all probably understand there’s a difference between viruses and bacteria. Staph infections like MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and E coli for instance are bacteria. Typically these are treated with antibiotics.

Viruses, on the other hand, are tinier than bacteria. Unlike bacteria, viruses can’t survive without a host. Also unlike bacteria, most viruses do cause disease, and they’re quite specific about the cells they attack. For example, certain viruses attack cells in the liver, respiratory system, or blood. In some cases, viruses target bacteria. The thing to remember is to avoid either bacterial infections and viruses by using hygienic products and procedures.

Now, getting back to our new product, PaintShield™. It is an antimicrobial, antibacterial paint product. Just what is “antimicrobial,” “antibacterial” coating or paint? First of all they are not the same thing. Antimicrobial agents in paints inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as mildew and mold that can stain and deteriorate a coating over time. Antimicrobial agents also inhibit bacterial odor growth.

Paint Shield® Shown to Kill MRSA and Other Bacteria

Meanwhile, antibacterial agents in paint inhibit the growth of bacteria only. In paints, antibacterial agents protect just the paint film itself.

In testing this product, it was revealed that by continuing to kill MRSA and other bacteria, even after repeated contamination, Paint Shield® offered hospitals and other facilities an important new tool to help combat bacteria on painted surfaces. Many commercial and healthcare facilities have enacted sanitation or disinfection programs. And the good news – it’s good for your home as well! PaintShield™ can be used in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry and nursery rooms!

One more thing. Application is simple – Paint Shield® can be applied on interior hard, nonporous ceilings, walls, doors and trim. No fancy equipment needed for us to apply – we use good old paint brushes and rollers.
